An Act Funding Paperless Voting at Student Government Association Legislative Meetings
1. WHEREAS, the Student Government Association is dedicated to cultivating a culture of awareness about environmental sustainability at the University of Maryland; and,
2. WHEREAS, the University is striving to be “recognized as a national model for a Green University” as stated in the Strategic Plan; and,
3. WHEREAS, the SGA is currently using paper ballots to record individual votes at every legislative meeting; and,
4. WHEREAS, a switch to a paperless voting method would benefit the environment; and,
5. WHEREAS, the University Senate has taken advantage of paperless voting by using clickers; and,
6. WHEREAS, The University has a contract with TurningPoint Technologies for our clickers; and,
7. WHEREAS, the clicker technology is the same technology used by some lecturers at the University of Maryland, College Park. These handheld devices communicate with PowerPoint or as a standalone; and,
8. WHEREAS, an individual clicker cost $28, the case to hold the clickers is $50, and the receiver is $100; and,
9. WHEREAS, the UMD legislature is made up of 41 legislators and each legislator would have a clicker; and
10. WHEREAS, 45 clickers will be purchased as a precautionary measure in the event that a voting situation arises in which more than 41 individuals must vote; and,
11. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that $1410.00 from SGA Legislative Reserves be allocated to purchase the voting system; and,
12. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that any unused funds be returned to SGA Legislative Reserves.
