A Resolution Supporting 'Support Haiti Day'
1. WHEREAS, the Student Government Association (SGA) is represents the student body and influences matters concerning the Department of Residential Life; and,
WHEREAS, the Department of Residential Life's mission promotes an appreciation of diversity in the residence hall environment; and,
WHEREAS, the University of Maryland's (UMD) mission sees to improve equity and diversity and to raise cultural awareness among students; and,
WHEREAS, the UMD has a significant population of students, staff, and faculty of Haitian descent or those who have been strongly affected by the earthquake ; and,
WHEREAS, the UMD Students for Haiti group is a diverse group devoted to raising awareness about the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti ; and,
WHEREAS, Support Haiti Day will be a daylong event to highlight relief efforts, educate students about Haitian culture, history, and politics, and to raise awareness of how students can help; and,
WHEREAS, the Support Haiti Day will unite student groups, academic departments, and others across campus toward a single philanthropic cause; and,
WHEREAS, the media coverage and student activism of the Haiti earthquake has declined since the initial quake; and,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Student Government Association supports Support Haiti Day and will help promote the event.
