A Resolution Urging the University of Maryland to Adopt the Designated Suppliers Program
The Designated Suppliers Program is effectively a coalition of universities that use their collective market power (which, with the popularity of university apparel, is very significant) to tell corporations that they may only use university trademark licenses and logos on apparel produced in specific factories designated by the Workers' Rights Consortium to fulfill a certain set of labor standards. It offers a grace period and only asks corporations to slowly increase over time the percentage of the amount of apparel coming from designated factories, to allow time for logistics problems, etc. Again, this won't make university apparel cost significantly more. It's less than fifty cents per clothing item to more than triple their wages and improve their living conditions substantially, and as university apparel's market curve is like – with different prices, the demand is roughly the same, as people buy UMD gear because they want UMD gear, not cheap clothes. So they already markup the clothes quite a bit for profit's sake, way more than what anti-sweatshop measures would influence.

An Act Funding the Pan Hellenic Council 2009 Homecoming Step Show
The Pan Hellenic Council needs money. They have an event that roughly costs $17, 000, and SGA gave them $5,865. They are about 11,000 short. The Finance Committee has suggested that PHC line item money from the Spring Block Show to the Step Show and apply for spring funding of the Spring Block Show. The money given to the Spring Block Show was about $6,500. The PHC has done fundraising already of which they have raised about $2,000. They need help as the event is in 3 weeks. PHC also prefers not to remove all the funding of their Spring Block Show as spring funding is not guaranteed.

An Act Funding the Construction of a Bus Shelter for Leonardtown and Fraternity Row
This bill provides funds for the purchase of a bus shelter that will be installed by DOTS at the Leonardtown-Fraternity Row bus stop. This is a part of my service initiative that I am using to address various concerns regarding safety and infrastructure in and around Leonardtown. I met with Seth Clute of DOTS and Dan Hayes of Facilities Management on July 31, 2009 to discuss options for different bus shelters to be placed at this stop and I was informed that University had commissioned several bus shelters to be built. I met with David Davitaia of DOTS to discuss more specific costs. Since there is no need for a concrete pad, Davitaia informed me that DOTS would be able to provide funds towards the purchase of the bus shelter that would have been used by DOTS for the pad. Installation should take place during October after the funds are secured because DOTS would like to install prior to the weather getting colder.

A Resolution Supporting the Implementation of Verba Software
Verba Software is a web-based software designed to help students improve academic decision making and to increase the affordability of textbooks. This site will allow students at the University of Maryland to track degree requirements, search for courses, see what classes their friends are taking, optimize their schedule, and compare textbook prices. Verba Software is a more searchable and interactive source than Testudo, which makes it a useful resource for students. Also, the first two years it is used at the University of Maryland, it is free.

This bill is to keep the Good Morning Commuters program running for its third year in a row. Good Morning Commuters was started two years ago by the chair of the Off Campus Affairs Committee in order to create a time and space for the traditionally divided off campus students to come together as a community. It has also provided a positive arena for SGA outreach to off campus students, helping those students feel cared for by the SGA and the University.

A Resolution Supporting the University’s Stand Against Terp-Colored Beer Cans
Anheuser-Busch has recently announced their “Fan Can” program, in which the company will market Bud Light beer cans in school colors, including those of the Maryland Terrapins, for football season. This campaign actively markets a controlled substance to fans of all ages, and intentionally exploits school spirit for University of Maryland in order to sell alcoholic beverages. This legislation expresses disapproval of the marketing campaign.

A Resolution Supporting an Accurate Translation of the Official University of Maryland Motto
The official motto of the state of Maryland, “Fatti Maschii, Parole Femine,” is the motto of the Calvert family, who first founded the colony of Maryland. The loose translation of the phrase is “Manly Deeds, Womanly Words.” However, the Maryland state government has adopted “Strong Deeds, Gentle Words” as a more accurate translation. The University of Maryland archives officially cites the loose translation of the motto. This legislation supports an official adoption of the more accurate translation of the motto.
